Senior Director, American Dental Association Division of Science

At the time of the training, Dr. Zeller served as Senior Director, Research and Laboratories, in the Division of Science at the American Dental Association (ADA). Dr. Zeller is a strategic thought leader in the use of informatics and big data for the future of value-based care delivery.  Dr. Zeller was asked to explore with trainees how Big Data and Health Information Technology serves as the “glue” that will increasingly integrate healthcare systems in the future.

Gregory G. Zeller, DDS, MS, is Senior Director, Research and Laboratories, American Dental Association, Chicago, IL, and Chair, ADA Standards Committee for Dental Informatics

The American Dental Association (ADA) Division of Science Research Laboratories test and evaluate dental products for the ADA Professional Product Review and for the ADA Seal of Acceptance, conduct research on critical and emerging scientific issues of importance to dentistry, and develop and implement standards for dental products such as materials, instruments, equipment, and digital technologies, including software and hardware.

As Chair of the ADA Standards Committee for Dental Informatics, Dr. Zeller leads the national and international activities of this voluntary consensus standards development organization, which is fully accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Dr. Zeller also serves as a member of the Oversight Committee for the ADA ANSI-accredited Standards Committee for Dental Products and as an ADA representative on the United States delegations to the International Organization for Standardization Technical Committees for health informatics and for dentistry.  

Dr. Zeller also represents the ADA on the Board for Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise International and on the Board of Commissioners of the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology. He also serves as co-chair of the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) Strategic Advisory Working Group and as a member of the DICOM Executive Committee, the DICOM Standards Committee, and the DICOM Dentistry Working Group.  

Dr. Zeller has previously served as an Associate Professor at the University of Maryland Dental School, as Director of the Dental Care Clinical Center for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Maryland Healthcare System, and as Director of Dental Informatics at the VA Central Office in Washington, DC.

Dr. Zeller received a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Maryland in 1975 and a Master of Science degree from the University of Maryland in 1983 after completing research in pharmacology.
