Children's Oral Health and Dental Care in the US Today: A Status Report
The mission of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) Pediatric Oral Health Research & Policy Center is to inform and advance research and policy development that will promote optimal children’s oral health and care. Ms. Silverman was asked to focus on pediatric demographics to consider who your patients will be in the future.
Evolving Clinical Approaches to Caries Management in Children
Dr. Fontana is a leader in the field of cariology education and research. She recently received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) for her work on caries risk assessment in children and shared a few moments with the President talking about children’s oral health. Dr. Fontana was asked to consider the best use of cariology science in the management of disease and in addressing oral health inequities.
Pediatric Dental Workforce Directions
The Institute of Medicine (IOM), the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences, asks and answers the nation’s most pressing questions about health and health care. Dr. Lustig is an IOM Senior Program Officer where her most recent work has focused on the health care workforce. In her talk, Dr. Lustig was asked to consider the future workforce in dentistry from lessons learned in medicine.
Use of Health Information Technology in Pediatric Dental Practice
At the time of the training, Dr. Zeller served as Senior Director, Research and Laboratories, in the Division of Science at the American Dental Association (ADA). Dr. Zeller is a strategic thought leader in the use of informatics and big data for the future of value-based care delivery. Dr. Zeller was asked to explore with trainees how Big Data and Health Information Technology serves as the “glue” that will increasingly integrate healthcare systems in the future.
Public and Private Dental Insurance for US Children
DentaQuest is the third largest dental benefits administrator in the United States. DentaQuest’s mission is to improve the oral health of all to achieve a nation free of dental disease. DentaQuest CEO Fay Donohue was aksed to share her thoughts about the trends in dental care financing—both private and public—so today’s trainees can think about how they will be paid in the future.
